Model Range

In 2026, for the first time, more battery-electric than internal combustion engine van models will be available in Europe: 61 compared to 54. By 2027, 18 of the 64 available electric van models in Europe will come from manufacturers outside of Europe. Source: Transport & Environment.

Operating costs

Transport & Environment reports operating costs in Germany of 10 cents per kilometer for light electric vans compared to 15 cents per kilometer for diesel, a difference of 33 percent. For heavy vans over 3.5 tons, the figures are 17 compared to 23 cents per kilometer. The assumptions are a five-year holding period and an annual mileage of 37,700 kilometers.

What these numbers mean for vehicle selection

The market is growing across the board, but unevenly: The electrification of light commercial vehicles is progressing about six times faster in Denmark and Sweden than in Italy. For fleet operators, this means that model availability, charging infrastructure, and service networks depend more on the country than on the vehicle. For manufacturers, it means that a European market entry cannot be planned as a single market.
