WLTP range and real-world range: why the values differ
As of: September 11, 2026
WLTP is the legally prescribed measuring procedure for consumption, range and emissions in the European Union. The WLTP range is a standardized value determined under defined conditions. It is used to compare vehicles, not to plan a trip.
The five factors that determine the real-world range
Temperature. At low outside temperatures, the usable battery capacity decreases, and the interior heating draws energy from the battery. A heat pump reduces this effect, but does not eliminate it.
Loading. A commercial vehicle is rarely driven empty. The WLTP measurement is carried out in a defined loading condition that is below the typical operating weight.
Body structure. A box or refrigerated body structure significantly changes the weight and aerodynamic drag compared to the chassis reference. The range specification for a chassis applies before the body structure is installed.
Auxiliary consumers. Cooling units, tail lifts, and tools draw energy from the traction battery, unless a separate system is present.
Driving profile. Many stops with recuperation are more favorable than constant highway driving. For electric commercial vehicles, the opposite of the diesel rule of thumb therefore applies.
What reliable range planning looks like
The basis is not the range specification, but the application profile: real daily distance, altitude profile, average payload, auxiliary consumers, outside temperature in the worst month, and the available charging window in the depot. The daily energy requirement is calculated from these values. The battery size is derived from this, with a reserve for the worst-case scenario.
Relation to HEERO Motors
HEERO Motors will only publish range specifications for the new generation after validation is complete, and will then present them as a chassis cab reference before body installation. The vehicle variant is derived during the sales consultation from the application profile, not from a range specification.
Questions and Answers
How much range does an electric van lose in winter?
The loss arises from reduced usable battery capacity and from the energy demand of the heating system. A heat pump and battery preconditioning reduce this effect.
What is the real-world range instead of WLTP?
The real-world range depends on temperature, payload, body type, auxiliary consumers and driving profile, and is regularly below the WLTP value in commercial vehicle operation.
Why does the range decrease with the body?
A body increases weight and aerodynamic drag. Range specifications for chassis refer to the condition before body installation.
